Friends of the Earth France and others
A huge conference and demonstration at the EU Farm Ministers debate on the Common Agricultural Policy
(September)

Friends of the Earth France, and local group FoE Haute Savoie jointly organised (with CPE, ATTAC and others) a big gathering in the French town of Annecy on September 21 and 22. Over 2000 people attended conferences, workshops and festivities over the two days, as well as FoE France's information stand.

The gathering ended with a demonstration through the town, to where the Ministers were meeting. Check out the pictures here to see what they did!

FoE France Information stand

Friends of the Earth Europe attended the event and spoke at one plenary conference on CAP and the environment. This is the first time that the Food and Biodiversity Programme has made a public presentation on this issue and we used documents from FoE France and other partner NGOs (Via Campesina Europe and Birdlife) to make the presentation.

You can download the powerpoint presentation (in French) here.

At the Planet Diversity Festival and Demonstration in Bonn
(May)

Friends of the Earth Europe groups were out in full force this May. Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain and England, Wales and Northern Ireland were some of the groups represented. We were in Bonn for the 9th Meeting of the Parties (MOP) of the Biosafety Protocol to call for strong liability laws for damage caused by GMOs. Planet Diversity held a demonstration and festival on the first day of the MOP week. In particular, Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) was very visible, dressed as a variety of vegetables such as carrots and tomotoes. It had a large tent at the festival, visibly marked by two Giant Maize which got a lot of attention from the public.

French ban on Monsanto's GM maize
(January)

Campaigners from Friends of the Earth France took the Giant Maize to a protest outside the French Senate, as part of a coalition of NGOs and farmers groups. By highlighting public opposition to GMOs in France, the coalition helped convince the French Government to introduce a ban on Monsanto's MON810 GM maize.

Portuguese GM-Free Coalition
Action outside the Agriculture Council
(September)

Friends of the Earth often works with other local groups across Europe including the Portuguese GM-Free Coalition. The recent informal meeting of the European Agriculture Council took place in Porto, Portugal. This was a good reason for GMO activists to come together and highlight how irresponsible GMO approvals are. Many came from Galicia, Spain, to lend support. We had a lot of fun, and a whole bunch of newspapers and TV coverage as well.
