FoEE assessments of the pending GMO authorisations

On 19 May 2004, the approval of the Bt11 by the European Commission ended the 6 year moratorium. Since then it has been approved Monsanto maize NK 603, Monsanto maize Mon 863 for feed and Monsanto oilseed rape GT73. Currently there are over 25 requests for the approval of genetically modified (GM) products in the EU pipeline (see here).

Friends of the Earth has heavily criticised the way that the European Commission is pushing genetically modified foods onto the EU market. Each time that the European Commission asked to the member States to vote on the approval of new GMOs, the Commission has failed to get their support (see here). Additionally, scientific bodies of the member States keep being divided about the safety of GMOs. Friends of the Earth strongly believes that the Commission is acting under pressure from the US and large biotech corporations by pushing GMOs in Europe without political and scientific agreement. It calls on the Commission to put the interests of the consumers first, not cave in to industry pressure and to use the appropriate procedures to assess GM foods.

Friends of the Earth has also criticised that despite serious loopholes in the information provided by the companies, several GMOs have received a positive risk assessment under this regulation.

See below for several detailed comments on proposals for food - environmental approvals.
