Picture exhibition: 'Extractive industries: blessing or curse?'

An exhibition from Friends of the Earth Europe aims to raise public awareness in Europe about the negative impacts of the extractives industries on our environment, health, and society.

Featuring images of gas flaring, oil spills on land and sea, pipelines, oil industry waste and the aftermath of accidents, it explains the adverse impacts of the extractive industries on economics, poverty and human rights. More...

Green product proposals fall short of potential

Brussels, 17 July 2008 - New laws proposed by the European Commission to create greener products need serious strengthening if they are to help tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, says Friends of the Earth Europe.

The environmental organisation today welcomed the belated publication of the Sustainable Consumption and Production action plan, but is calling on the European Parliament and national governments to improve the plans which are extremely weak, having been watered down by in-fighting within the Commission.   More...

New report: Regulators shirking responsibility on Bisphenol A

Harmful chemical should be regulated under REACH

Brussels, 10 July 2008 - Regulators remain oblivious to the harmful effects of a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA) widespread in plastic consumer products and need to act urgently to protect consumers, says Friends of the Earth Europe in a report out today.

'Blissfully unaware of Bisphenol A: Reasons why regulators should live up to their responsibilities' reveals that despite firm scientific consensus about the health hazards of the chemical, European authorities are shirking their responsibilities and attempting to postpone any decision on whether this substance should require authorisation until 2013.  More...
