Biodiversity (biological diversity) – is life. The diversity and richness of species is one of our most important resources, a foundation of a human existence and provides a myriad of educational, spiritual and aesthetic values. Humanity depends on biodiversity like nothing else – yet at the same time, it is suffering the worst decline since 65 Million years. Action is urgently needed to preserve our forests, the fish in the oceans, our grasslands and their contribution to human well-being.

On the political level FoEE advocates for strong biodiversity targets that are in line with the Aichi targets and the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.

Numerous European FoE groups take on initiatives and campaigns to protect and enhance nature and natural resources. The work that FoE groups devote to biodiversity includes issues such as:

  • Cross-national and international ecological networks and creation and management of protected areas,
  • Protection of large predators and anti-poaching activities,
  • Forest protection and sustainable forest management,
  • Making agriculture ecologically sustainable,
  • Marine Ecosystems protection and sustainable fisheries,
  • Implementing international agreements for biodiversity,
  • Advocating for sustainable and less consumption as well as a just distribution of biodiversity benefits, respecting people’s rights globally.

The activities of our member groups range from practical field work and political lobbying to awareness raising and environmental education.
