The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UN PFII) has a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights. At its 6th session which took place in NewYork the issue of oil palm expansions were addressed.

Sustainable Bioenergy: A Framework for Decision Makers. April 2007. United Nations Energy is the principle UN interagency mechanism in the field of energy involving the World Bank, FAO, UNEP, WHO etc. It's framework distiguishes clearly between using biomass for energy uses (eg cooking fuels in some developing countries) and biofuels to export to northern countries and the problems this may encounter.

Biofuels and Commodity Markets: Palm Oil Focus. P. Thoenes, FAO, Interesting paper based on a presentation made at AgraInforma conference ?The Impact of biofuels on commodity Markets?, held in Brussels on 24-25 October 2006. The paper discusses the background to the expansion of palm oil and highlights the relation with expanding the use of oilseed rape for biodiesel in Europe and the increased demand for palm oil.
