Global Climate Action Day
Saturday 6 December 2008

Coinciding with the UN Climate Talks (COP 14, MOP 4)
in Poznan, Poland, from 1 to 12 December 2008

On 6 December, thousands of people will join in demonstrations around the world to call on world leaders to take urgent action on climate change. The day of action has been timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP14) which will take place in Poznan, Poland between 1 to 12 December.

Texts drafted in Poznan will form the basis for the post-2012 agreement which must be finalised at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009.
The EU is today home to 8% of the world's population, but has produced 27% of total carbon dioxide emissions since 1850, and still produces around 15% of annual CO2 emissions today. The EU 27 also accounts for 22% of global GDP giving it financial capability to effectively bring down emissions at home and to support developing countries to mitigate their emissions. Europe is uniquely placed to play the leadership role necessary to galvanise other countries towards a strong post-2012 agreement

Europe's leaders go to Poznan to the UN climqte negotiations, a crucial milestone in negotiations for a global deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions beyond 2012. The EU's climate and energy package is due to be finalised its response to climate change for the next 12 years during the conference and will determine Europe's position at the international talks.

The EU's climate and energy package - so far the biggest legislative effort on climate change in the world - will dictate Europe's negotiating position at the UN talks. As such, it will be key to the chances of achieving a global
deal which stands any possibility of keeping global warming below 2 degrees and avoiding climate catastrophe.

Environment and development groups are urging the EU to show leadership in the fight against climate change. FoEE and other NGOs make the link between the EU energy package and the Poznan talks and reveal what they believe European leadership looks like.

Friends of the Earth Europe demands that the EU must commit to reduce emission domestically by 40% by 2020 and in addition put considerable amounts of cash on the table to compensate for its historical responsibility for producing the emissions that cause climate change.
