International Demonstrations on Climate Change
Saturday 8th December 2007

Coinciding with the UN Climate Talks (COP 13, MOP 3) in Bali,
Indonesia, from the 3rd to the 14th December 2007

On 8th December, thousands of people joined in demonstrations around the world to call on world leaders to take urgent action on climate change. The day of action has been timed to coincide with the UN climate negotiations which were taking place in Bali, Indonesia between December 3th and 14th.

In Spring this year European Heads of State made important political decisions that will shape the EUs energy and emission reduction policy for the decade to come.

EU leaders adopted a unilateral target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels, alongside a recommendation that developed countries should make a 30% cut in order to avoid the most severe global warming predictions. Friends of the Earth Europe has called into question the strategic sense of this apparently conflicting conclusion, predicting that the EU now has a tough challenge to convince other developed countries to take on the higher target.

A target to provide 20% of Europe's energy from renewable sources by 2020 was agreed. Friends of the Earth Europe welcomes the binding nature of this target but stresses the need for specific sub-targets across sectors like electricity, transport and heating and cooling.

The EU leaders reached only a very weak agreement regarding energy efficiency, urging each member state to fulfill Europe's potential to cut energy waste by 20% by 2020, but without concretely making the request into a real commitment.

Friends of the Earth Europe has expressed alarm at the fact that still too much attention is given to false solutions such as nuclear, CCS or unsustainable biofuels which are dangerous and unsustainable technologies and which do not tackle the problem at its root: cutting energy waste and reducing our emissions!
