"Tar sands - undermining EU Climate Ambitions?"

Corinne Lepage, Member of the European Parliament, Friends of the Earth Europe and Eurosif are pleased to invite you to the Public Debate ‘Tar sands - undermining EU Climate Ambitions?’

The Debate will be held in the European Parliament, Brussels, Belgium, Wednesday, 5 May 2010, 09.30-12:30, Room: P4B001 (Paul-Henri Spaak)

The Debate will present the environmental, climate and social impacts of tar sands and discuss relevant EU policy proposals in the context of EU Climate Agenda (Fuel Quality Directive - FQD), Europe 2020 Strategy, relations with Canada as well as address the issue of EU energy security in the tar sands context.

  • What are the impacts of tar sands exploration on climate, environment, indigenous people and developing countries?
  • What are the current efforts and EU policy tools to reduce climate impacts of fuels?
  • How to prevent heavy crude oil from undermining EU climate ambitions and development objectives?
  • Are there lessons to be learned from how California adopted its Low Carbon Fuels Standard?

This high level event will bring together representatives of the European Commission, European Parliament, US and European experts, industry, international organisations, civil society members from European and developing countries including communities affected by tar sands operations in Canada.

Friends of the Earth Europe can reimburse Travel and Accommodation costs for a limited number of civil society participants.
