OMV: Oil and gas projects are never sustainable!

OMV advertising claim ruled misleading

The Jury d'Ethique Publicitaire (JEP) has instructed OMV to correct the advertisement entitled: "Who is investing in sustainable oil and gas projects?". The verdict follows a complaint filed by Friends of the Earth Europe and Global 2000 (Friends of the Earth Austria) and an appeal.

The specific advertisement FoEE complained about was published in Belgium in the weekly magazine "European Voice" in the issue dated 10th April 2008. In the advertisement by OMV, a multinational oil and gas company, it attempts to bolster the company's image as an environmentally-friendly and responsible company. After asking the question "WHO is investing in sustainable oil and gas projects?", OMV answers this by clearly alleging that this is "OMV - the leading oil and gas group in Central and Eastern Europe".

The JEP rejected our initial complaint, but agreed with the argumentation in our subsequently submitted appeal regarding OMVs claim that they are "securing Europe's future energy supply...". The JEP ruled that this claim was likely to mislead the reader, and instructed OMV to correct the advertisment.
