Exxon's slick greenwashing

See what ExxonMobil claims and what their Corporate Citizenship report says

1. Claim: Taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
(published in the European Voice, Issue April 4-11, 2007)

  • Highlight some of the steps we're already taking to address the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in effective and meaningful ways
  • Our scientists and engineers are working to reduce emissions today

But: Emissions have risen from 136.8 metric tons (2003) to 145.5 metric tons (2006)
Hydrocarbon flaring (Burning of natural gas surfacing along with oil during production) has equally been on the rise over the same period of time: from 612million cubic feet per day (2003) up to 891million cubic feet per day (2006)

CO2 in million metric tons greenhouse gas emissions

Hydrocarbon flaring in million cubic feet per day

2. Claim: Record low number of oil spills
(published in the European Voice, Issue May 24-30, 2007.)
But: The number of spills is indeed lower but the total amount spilled in 2006 is over 3 times higher as in 2005.
