What SHELL, BP and SAPREF has signed up to

Both Shell and BP signed the Global Compact Principles in July 26, 2000. Through principle 9 in the Global Compact Shell and BP has promised to "encourage the development and diffusion of environmental friendly technologies". (7) Other guidelines that applies to the companies are for example: Shell Group Business Principles, SAPREF General Business Principles, OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises (Shell, BP and SAPREF) and OECD Section Concerning the Environment and relevant South African law.

Both holding companies are highly promoting their CSR-work and make much out of their responsibilities and ethical behaviour, on paper and websites. BP states their goals as: "no accidents, no harm to people, and no damage to the environment."(8) Much can be read about BP's responsible behaviour in their Environment and Social Reports(9) , Ethical Conducts(10), Health, Safety and Environment Policy(11).

Shell has been recognized by many as one of the pioneers of CSR, based on its initial response to the international outcry over the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa, and the proposed dumping of its Brent Spar oil platform in the North Sea. CSR was a promise that companies would go beyond their existing legal obligations to address issues of sustainability, development, and human rights.(12)
