BUILD A DIKE AROUND WORLD LEADERS
SAVE THE CLIMATE TREATY
Friends of the Earth bring thousands to Dike action at The Hague
(14th Nov) This week, thousands of people from all over the world
will descend on The Hague climate change negotiations to participate
in the mega-DIKE ACTION organised by Friends of the Earth International.
Citizens will travel by bike, bus, train and boat to show governments
that they must not fail us on the Kyoto Protocol!
The first citizens’ bus started its journey to The Hague climate
conference this morning from Estonia. 74 activists from 10 Baltic
environmental groups will join dike-builders travelling from every
part of the continent, eager to bring their message to world leaders.
Pictures here.
It will take three days for the Baltic bus to get to The Hague.
„We don‘t care how long and tiresome the trip will be - our aim
is no less than saving of the climate treaty,“ said Ms Hanna Maran
of Friends of the Earth Estonia, organiser of the bus trip.
The sand-bag Dike is expected to be more than 500m long and 1.5
metres high. It will be decorated with banners, flags and slogans
from groups and individuals from around the world. Music, theatre
and art events will also be taking place, and there will be speakers
and witnesses of extreme weather events. FOE participants will come
from over 45 countries, from Norway to Nigeria, and from Chile to
the Czech Republic.

12:45 – 15:00 Building of the Dike
15:00 – Closing Speech by Ricardo Navarro
Ricardo Navarro, Chair of Friends of the Earth International commented:
“The Hague talks may be the last chance to rescue the 1997 Kyoto
agreement to fight man-made climate change. This year has seen severe
weather disasters all over the world. Thousands have died, and millions
have seen their homes and livelihoods damaged or destroyed. We will
see more of this with climate change! We are here to bear witness
to what is already happening, and to demand that Governments act
now to save our children from the terrible danger of climate change.”
Our experts on the politics and science of climate change will also
be present throughout the Kyoto Protocol talks. We are available
for expert analysis, advice and comment at any time. We never close!
