Why we are giving out the awards
The Carbon Dinosaur has been touring Europe exposing those responsible
for blocking action on climate change. The fossil fuel industry is very
fond of self congratulatory acknowledgments regarding their activities
to face up to climate change, so we decided to follow suit and award
Climate Killer Oscars to Europe's worst Carbon Dinosaurs.
To qualify for the awards the winners must have had distinguished themselves
through their "exceptional efforts to ruin the climate and attained
excellence in the field of emissions production". This is no easy
achievement. The winners would have managed to ensure the dominance
of outdated, inefficient and unsustainable technology. They have been
resisting the overwhelming claim for emission cuts, reduced energy demand,
increased efficiency and increased use of renewable energy. They would
have acted against the long term interests of for the short term profits
of the few.
All pillars of the fossil fuel industry, including ministers, lobbyists,
chairmen and politicians, were eligible for these coveted awards.
As the tour went on, in several countries Climate Killer Awards
were given out to those who had done enough to be included in the climate
change Hall of Shame.
