Preventing climate change
starts at home: YOU can start saving the climate NOW!
"Think globally, but act locally."
Rene Dubos, 1981
You can make a difference to climate change too.
By using less energy and less fossil fuels, everyone can help.
Make your voice heard and put pressure on politicians to phase
out the Carbon Dinosaurs that threaten the planet. Here is what
you can start doing today:
1. Switch to green energy. In many parts
of Europe, people can choose which company they buy electricity
from. Choose a company that provides electricity from renewable
sources, such as wind energy or solar power.
2. Replace all your light bulbs with energy
saving light bulbs. They are more expensive to buy but last
longer and use less electricity. Always switch your appliances
off completely. A TV on "Stand-by" consumes almost
as much energy as if switched on.
3. Use public transport whenever possible.
You spend more money for buying the car, on taxes, maintenance
and petrol than you ever will on public transport. Write to
your local government and demand investments in public transport
rather than building new roads.
4. Buy locally produced food. Transporting
goods to your supermarket contributes 11% to European greenhouse
gas emissions. If you buy locally produced goods, you will help
by decreasing transport needs and thus reduce emissions.
5. Ask your employer, your university or
your school what they are doing to reduce their emissions. Simple
changes can reduce electricity demand by 50% and more.
6. Support Friends of the Earth. Friends
of the Earth campaigns for sustainable and fair societies and
for the protection of the environment. You can make us stronger!
