Bulgaria, a country which targets EU accession in 2007, still keep its old communist energy production scheme as well as energy wasting consumption patterns. Thus the country's GDP is one of the most extensive ones in Europe. While Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is the first CEE nuclear plant to be closed due to its unsafe reactors, Martiza East TPP complex (3 TPPs and coal mines) is among the big polluters of the country. Poor quality domestic lignites are the only domestic fossil fuel source that might be recognized as a keeper of the national "big energy" scheme. Rapidly growing in last 10-15 years, transport sector is still equipped mostly with second hand and old soviet vehicles - both for private and public purposes. Despite the fact that Bulgaria already banned the use of leaded gasoline the emissions from the sector represents significant portion of the national quota (mainly trough NOx and CO). Due to the decline of the heavy industry emissions have decreased and currently Bulgaria is below its Kyoto target. Nevertheless, the lack of National Energy Efficiency Strategy and National Strategy for Renewable, supported by implementation plans, may endanger this situation in the near future, when economic growth is expected to be high. Carbon Dinosaur Tour in the Bulgaria will visit Pernik and Sofiya and
especially address three main actors that play a significant role in
the energy sector in Bulgaria. These actors are the Ministry of Energy
and Energy Resources as the main energy policy maker in the country;
the coal mining industry that represents high level of CO emissions;
and local municipalities that could play main role in the promotion
of energy efficiency and renewable schemes. |
