The Carbon Dinosaur in the Czech Republic

 In a nutshell

Like many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, energy efficiency is low in the Czech Republic. Emissions are 30% higher than the EU average, and climate change is not an issue of concern. Government plans on energy follow a Carbon Dinosaur approach: extending coal mining in Northern Bohemia will lead to the destrucion of several villages; renewable energies are not given priority.

CZECH | The Czech Republic, with its old fashioned coal power plants and inefficient industry is one of the highest polluters in Europe. Greenhouse Gas Emissions are 1/3 higher than EU average and per unit of GDP the figure is two times higher. So far, Climate Change has not been identified as a major issue in the Czech Republic and reducing carbon emissions are not a priority. The recently adopted national energy strategy aims to reach present EU per capita average by 2030. The energy sector is the largest source of Carbon emissions, they are responsible for almost half of the total emissions which was 144 million tonnes in 2001. Despite these facts, the Czech Republic is well on track with meeting its Kyoto target.

Hnuti DUHA (Friends of the Earth Czechia) in co-operation with Centrum pro dopravu a energetiku (Climate Action Network) are thus planning to exhibit Carbon Dinosaur in three different places.

The Carbon Dinosaur Tour in the Czech Republic will target groups responsible for blocking cleaner and more efficient energy consumption.

The Czech Power Company "CEZ" is the main polluter in the country (28% share of total CO2 emissions) The coal mining lobby, who represent an industry responsible for 56% of overall Carbon emissions in the first quarter of this year and the Ministry for Industry and Trade, which is unwilling to promote any substantial changes.
