In a nutshell
|
|
Finland has one of the highest per capita
energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission levels. Fears
about economic competitiveness prevent governments moving
to harness Finland's renewable potential. Countering this
popular misconception is a priority of the Dinosaur tour
in Finland.

With a population of just 5.2 million Finland is one of
world's leading countries in per capita energy consumption and greenhouse
gas emissions. This is due to its energy intensive industry but also
environmentally unconcerned social planning and generally extravagant
consumption habits. At least half of the energy is produced through
burning fossil fuels and less than 4% is generated from renewable energy
sources.
The Finnish government has given a questionable example
to other EU states and signalled its intentions by granting a permission
to building country's fifth nuclear reactor. Whilst Nuclear power doesn't
burn fossil fuels it does demonstrate a long term commitment to unsustainable
energy practices and an unwillingness to develop renewable energy. However,
Finland has enormous potential in producing biomass and wind energy
and through a combination of renewable and efficient energy production
could dramatically reduce its GHG emissions.
As elsewhere it is not just politicians who are blocking
action on climate change. Representatives of industry and trade union
movements have strongly resisted implementing the Kyoto protocol, since
EU emissions trading is widely thought to weaken Finland's competitiveness
and to slow down economic growth. There is widespread belief that renewable
and efficient energy production is economically harmful and threaten
the high living standard that Finland enjoys. A principal purpose of
the Carbon Dinosaur tour in Finland is to combat this misconception.
Other targets will be the crucial decision-makers, the largest private
sector fossil fuel consumers and the promoters of the outdated dinosaur
industries . The dino will visit major cities, summer festivals and
other big outdoor events.
