The Carbon Dinosaur in Macedonia |

The Republic of Macedonia has made progress in acknowledging the climate change problem and the UNFCC I(United Nations Frame Work Convention on Climate Change) was ratified in December 1997. Macedonia has also signed up to the PEREEA (Protocol on Energy Efficiency) and to the EST (Environmentally Sustainable Transport Treaty). These measures indicate that a political will to address Macedonian GHG emissions does exist. Macedonia's first National Communication on Climate Change was submitted to the UNFCCC secretariat in March 2003. However, Macedonia is a small country with a low level of industrialisation and small population. Therefore, the contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is relatively insignificant and climate change is not high on the political agenda. Despite the small contribution to climate change Macedonia is experiencing the consequences and in recent years has experienced a notable increase in extreme weather events. Energy production in Macedonia is predominantly fossil fuel based. As a consequence the energy sector is responsible for the vast majority of CO2 emissions. The other major contributor are metal production, agriculture and transport. However any moves to reduce emissions will begin with the energy sector which is responsible for 73% of total GHG emissions. In particular a switch from relying on solid fuels to more efficient energy production would be an obvious starting point. However climate change is not high on the political agenda in Macedonia. At this stage the work of Friends of the Earth Macedonia is primarily about raising public awareness, in particular amongst young people, of climate change and it's influence on our lives. The Carbon dinosaur action in Macedonia will be held in Skopje on 3rd July. There will be street theatre, discussions, a climate exhibition and of course the dinosaur. |
