The Carbon Dinosaur in Sweden |

There is a high level of public awareness with more than half the population recognising Climate Change as an important issue. Politicians reflect the public concern to the extent that they are tackling household-emissions and there has been a reduction in this sector. However there remain a lot to be done especially in promoting the use of renewable energies and energy efficiency. The Swedish situation is a bit different from most other EU-countries because electricity production is based on water and nuclear power and (yet) less on fossil fuels. Traffic and industry are the main contributors to climate change in Sweden and the emissions from these sectors are increasing. There has been a worrying shift in government policy and there are now plan to allow the use of flexible mechanisms without any restrictions. The decision on emissions trading alone will allow industry and energy prouction to increase their emissions by 60% from 1990 to 2007. A lot of political decisions on climate and energy policy are planned by the Swedish government during the coming year and our target is to make those decisions more progressive. This year a reform of energy and carbon taxes are planned and there are also plans to shift 30 Billion Kroner (around 3.5 Billion Euro) from income tax to environmental taxation. The dinosaur will work in targeting industries which are applying for a large number of free carbon emission rights and will also place pressure on negotiations for green tax reform. |
