MEPs challenged to answer the climate change call

Brussels, 9/10 September 2008 - As discussions on the EU energy package enter the crucial final stage, a new campaign entitled Time to Lead challenged key Members of the European Parliament to take action to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, an objective already agreed by the European Union. The pledge took the form of "answering the call" from European citizens on a red telephone hotline in Place du Luxembourg. The sound of a phone ringing and answerphone messages from citizens were broadcast. Time to Lead is a joint campaign by Friends of the Earth Europe, CAN-Europe, Greenpeace and WWF.

Twelve key MEPs from the industry (ITRE) and environmental (ENVI) committees of the European Parliament answered the call and questions put to them about the Energy Package. They then showed their support for keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius against an image of a thermometer.
