‘Corporate
Giant’ on Europe tour
On the 24th & 25th
June 2002, the Giant visited two Capitals of Europe, calling upon
decision-makers and broad public to support global rules for big
business!
Friends
of the Earth Europe brought a massive, super-fat, inflatable
businessman outside official meetings in Brussels and Luxembourg,
and urged the European Environment Council and the European
Commission to support legally binding rules for big business.
The Brussels and Luxembourg
actions were organised in the context of the FoE campaign and the
FoE worldwide action days towards the World Summit on Sustainable
Development – also called the Earth Summit - to take place in
Johannesburg, South Africa, at the end of August.
Friends of the Earth has made
an international convention to stop multinational companies from
causing environmental and social damage one of their chief
international campaigning priorities. |

Until the
Earth Summit, the corporate giant is travelling all over Europe
and giving visual support to FoE activists in their actions, where
they distribute information on the Summit and the FoE priorities,
and collect the people’s demands to the heads of State
for the Summit through different means - written on specially
designed postcards or taped as audio messages.

Join people from all over the world who want their concerns to be heard in Johannesburg! Tell politicians what you want them to do - send your personal demand to the Earth Summit and thus take part in one of the greatest art-installations ever. Thousands of little clay figures will remind politicians on whose behalf they discuss. For each demand, another figure will be added - so one of them can be YOURS!

The
Giant in Brussels, 24th of June 2002
The Corporate Giant and
FoEE activists "welcome" the participants to the European
Commission roundtable on Corporate Social Responsibility (mainly
representatives of the business sector) in Brussels.
The
Giant in Luxembourg, 25th of June 2002
After the adoption in Seville on June 22nd
of a very disappointing overall EU position towards the Earth Summit,
Friends of the Earth Europe warned that EU Environment Ministers must
take urgent action if the meeting is not to be seen as a backward step
for the environment, becoming dubbed "Rio-Minus-10".
See press release www.foeeurope.org/press/FT_25.06.02_Giant.htm
FoEE delivered their demands to EU Environment Ministers meeting in
Luxembourg. (click
here to see the FoEE's demands). FoE is calling on the Ministers to
support rules to make corporations fully accountable to the communities
they affect and legally liable for any damage they cause.
The Corporate Giant and
FoEE activists are in front of the Council building in Luxembourg,
where the European Environment Ministers meet.
FoEE and FoE Luxembourg (Mouvement
Ecologique) are delivering the FoEE demands
to EU Environment Ministers meeting in Luxembourg, of which the
luxembourger Minister for Environment, Mr. Goerens, is taking reception.
