Film of the action

People across Europe are calling on their governments to stop climate change. They are fed up with their energy coming from dirty and dangerous sources.

EU leaders will meet in Brussels on 8th-9th March to seal the fate of Europe's energy future. Friends of the Earth will be right outside the summit, demanding clean, safe energy now, before it's too late.

A giant installation of a mock EU flag will be erected outside the meeting. In each EU star will be a clean, safe energy option which people from all across Europe have put their signatures to. Europeans don’t want nuclear, coal or oil. They want a huge increase in renewable energy and a massive cut in energy waste.

In the weeks running up to the Summit on 8th-9th March, Friends of the Earth groups across Europe have collected signatures on the "Golden EU Energy Stars" that will be incorporated into the big installation outside the meeting. See photos

If EU leaders want to save our climate, then they must agree to:

RENEWABLE ENERGY
EU leaders must agree to more wind, solar and wave power. We need a binding commitment to meet, by 2020, 25% of europe's energy needs from renewable sources such as wind, sun and biomass.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
It is crucial to put an end to our appalling energy waste. We need to cut energy use by 20% by 2020

NO NUCLEAR POWER
We need a phase out of nuclear power – it is dangerous, expensive  and still produces greenhouse gas emissions

NO MORE FOSSIL FUELS
There must be a phase out of subsidies for dirty energy – pumping money into coal and nuclear distorts the market by making dirty energy artificially cheap, when actually renewable energy is more economic

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
Europe badly needs unsustainable trends in the transport sector to be reversed – we need fewer and more efficient cars, tax on fuel aviation and expanded public transport networks

CUTTING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
The Heads of States must agree to at least 30% emissions reduction by 2020 and 80% by 2050, in comparison to 1990. This is the only way to avoid catastrophic climate change.
