Signatures alone are not enough to stop climate change, according to Friends of the Earth Europe, as representatives of over 160 countries attend a ceremony in New York to sign an international climate agreement, forged in Paris last December.

Europe is turning its back on December's climate agreement in Paris, and further shackling itself to fossil fuels, according to Friends of the Earth Europe. The European Commission's 'energy security package', announced today, is the first big test for Europe's energy future, and prioritises subsidies for, and investments in, dirty fossil fuels, including gas, and the infrastructure required for them – locking Europe into decades of fossil fuel use.

The EU’s energy strategy is dangerously at odds with the urgent need to transform Europe’s energy system and fight climate change, Friends of the Earth Europe has said today in response to the publication of a progress report.

The European Commission vice president for the energy union, Maroš Šefčovič, gave his ‘State of the Energy Union’ speech in Brussels, and set out next steps for Europe's energy future.

19 March 2015

The 28 EU heads of state today backed a vision of Europe's energy future which will keep the continent dependent on fossil fuels.

European leaders' plans for an 'Energy Union' strategy were strongly criticised by Friends of the Earth Europe for the decision to emphasise new gas supplies, instead of prioritising energy efficiency and renewables to cut emissions and energy imports.

25 February 2015

Major announcements made in Brussels today suggest Europe is holding back from the urgent action needed to transform its energy system and combat climate change.

The European Commission released details of its 'Energy Union' vision for Europe's energy future, and its proposed preparations for a key global climate summit in Paris later this year.

24 October 2014

European governments are tonight claiming to have agreed ambitious action to cut greenhouse gas emissions, boost renewables and reduce energy use by 2030.

But the targets set by the EU's 28 heads of state are far below what is necessary and what could be done by Europe to combat climate change, according to Friends of the Earth Europe.

The deal commits the EU to cut emissions by at least 40%, provide at least 27% of the EU's energy from renewable sources, and reduce energy consumption by at least 27%.

23 October 2014

Europe's climate and energy plans benefit polluters, not people, Friends of the Earth Europe is warning as European leaders meet in Brussels.

The European Union's 28 heads of state and government are meeting today and tomorrow to strike a deal on climate and energy targets for 2030.

Friends of the Earth Europe, Oxfam, Climate Action Network Europe, and the European Environmental Bureau were outside the summit to protest the lack of action being proposed to move Europe away from fossil fuels.

1 October 2014

This October, European leaders will be setting Europe's climate and energy targets for the next sixteen years. The targets proposed so far by the European Commission (30%) are disappointingly low and seriously unambitious. Friends of the Earth Europe is calling for three, binding, ambitious targets.

One such target is energy efficiency. Below, we looked at how these targets impact the climate, economy, employment and energy security, using the European Commission's official projections.

23 July 2014

The European Commission today announced the level of reduction in energy use it wants Europe to achieve by 2030. The 30% energy savings target has been branded "bafflingly low" by Friends of the Earth Europe.

27 June 2014

Heads of state discussed climate and energy issues at a meeting in Brussels today, but their efforts to reduce dependence on energy imports are being blocked by the European Commission.

The majority of EU governments want to increase energy efficiency as a way to reduce import dependence. Today they confirmed that they plan to reach agreement in October on a package of measures to cut climate emissions, increase renewable energy, and reduce energy demand by 2030.
