Brussels, 16 October 2008 - European leaders have today pledged to press ahead with their planned response to climate change, despite attempts by some EU member states to scupper the measures in order to protect polluting industry, say Climate Action Network Europe, Friends of the Earth Europe, Greenpeace and WWF.
Brussels, 7 October 2008 - MEPs voting in the European Parliament's environment committee today have confirmed the European Commission's proposed answer to climate change, but have lacked the ambition to go further, said Climate Action Network Europe (CAN Europe), Greenpeace, WWF and Friends of the Earth Europe (FoE Europe).
Brussels/Helsinki, 26 September 2008 - The Finnish parliament yesterday agreed to consider a law to cut the country's climate changing emissions by five per cent every year. Members of the Finnish Parliament debated two climate bills which, if made law, would set legally binding annual targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and put Finland at the forefront of the fight against climate change in Europe.
Bills were submitted by both opposition and government MPs and sent to the environmental committee for further steps.
Brussels, Belgium - The European Parliament's industry committee is trying to ditch the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and to boycott 2020 climate targets, environmental groups said following today's vote on how the carbon market should operate after 2012.
The committee voted to delay or even prevent the planned shift from a 20 to a 30% emission reduction target, on condition that an international climate deal is reached next year.
