Campaigners from across Europe gathered in Bulgaria recently to discuss plans to tackle resource use, consumption and waste, as part of our programme of European School of Sustainability* events. It proved an inspiring meeting that offered the opportunity to share ideas and experiences and build a united, strong movement, writes Meadhbh Bolger, resource use campaigner at Friends of the Earth Europe.

The European Commission today launched its revised proposal to tackle resource use and waste in Europe. The reworked Circular Economy Package is weaker than last year’s axed proposal, according to Friends of the Earth Europe, and lacks the solid foundations required to address Europe’s overconsumption of resources and its global impact.

The European Parliament today voted to back strong waste and recycling targets, and pushed for solutions to the fundamental problem of Europe's resource overconsumption.

The vote comes after the European Commission controversially shelved its flagship piece of waste and resource legislation – the circular economy package – last year. It has since promised to re-table it in a "more ambitious" form.

MEPs today sent a strong signal to the European Commission to back truly ambitious rules to reduce resource use, amid concerns that the Commission is planning on watering down its flagship piece of resource use and waste legislation.

There are proven solutions to prevent waste of natural resources, all they need is EU support, according to a new report by Friends of the Earth Europe. Preventing Waste outlines ways in which recycling has been boosted, consumption lowered and products repaired instead of being scrapped. The projects examined all contribute to making the economy more circular – keeping resources in it, rather than sending them to landfill or incineration.

Plans to reduce Europe's waste and improve its air quality are being abandoned, the European Commission announced today with the release of its new work programme. Friends of the Earth Europe severely condemned the decision to drop what it saw as vital pieces of legislation to improve citizens' health, protect the environment and ensure that Europe's recovery is sustainable and responsible.

A leaked copy of the European Commission's workplan, due to be formally announced on Tuesday 16 December, has revealed plans to abandon proposed legislation to improve resource efficiency and air quality in Europe. The workplan sets out the priorities of the European Commission – the European Union's executive branch – for the next five years under its new president, Jean Claude Juncker.
