Friends of the Earth Europe is seeking a:
CLIMATE JUSTICE AND ENERGY PROGRAMME INTERN
For six months
Internship in the Brussels office, with occasional travel in Europe.
Start date: 1 September 2010
This is a unique opportunity to learn and work alongside our climate justice and energy team to help influence the EU to take up its responsibility to fight climate change, and to help bring people’s voices to decision-makers.
We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic person to do an internship with our international FoEE team. The intern position is based in Brussels, 5 days a week, and runs for six months from September 2010 until February 2011. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about and contribute to campaigning with an NGO working at EU level – part of a vibrant European and international network.
Climate change can be stopped. Jointly with national groups in 18 countries we are running the 'Big Ask' campaign demanding that Europe cuts its emissions by at least 40% by 2020 and 100% by 2050 and provides its fair share of finances for helping developing countries tackle climate change.
FoEE campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. It unites more than 31 national organisations with thousands of local groups and is part of the world's largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International.
The internship key areas:
- Support in preparation, implementation and evaluation of a 4-day meeting in October in Hungary with 50 people from the Friends of the Earth network, as well as a 2-day meeting with 30 people in Brussels in February
- Production of the monthly update of our European campaigns within the network
- Updating the internal tools used to communicate between groups
- Web page development and maintenance
- Support in European mobilisation work to coincide with the UN climate negotiations in December. This will involve contacting FoE groups, providing materials and doing active mobilisation
- Support in developing a 'Climate justice toolkit', by identifying tools for the network and developing these tools together with our network
- Help with contacting Friends of the Earth groups and Young Friends of the Earth to share information
- Supporting the team in their ongoing work in the Big Ask and Energy Efficiency campaigns
- Supporting the organization in its fundraising and operational tasks
Essential requirements:
- Good networking and communications skills, willingness to liaise with national and local groups across Europe
- Logistical, problem solving skills
- Fluency in English
- Able to work in a team and independently with people from different cultural backgrounds
- Able to occasionally travel abroad and during weekends
- Commitment to the values, vision and mission of Friends of the Earth
- Flexibility, ability to improvise and multi-tasking skills
- Ability to work to deadlines and prioritise workloads
- Educated to degree standard
- Sense of humour and creativity
Desirable:
- Knowledge of climate justice topics
- Experience in campaign organising and/or activist background
- Experience in NGO work and/or volunteering. Experience with Friends of the Earth network or one of our allies is a plus point.
- Project management experience, preferably working internationally
