Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) is recruiting a
Communications Intern
Based in Brussels, full time, for six months.
This is a unique opportunity to join the communications team of a green NGO working at a European level in Brussels. If you can demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in communications and the ability and willingness to learn fast, we can in return offer you the chance to take on considerable levels of responsibility supporting FoEE campaigns on issues including climate change, corporate accountability, food and farming, and trade.
Friends of the Earth Europe campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. It unites more than 30 national organisations with thousands of local groups and is part of the world's largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International.
The Job
Website / Online Communications
- Support the Communications Officer in keeping the FoEE website up-to-date and populated with relevant resources and materials
- Interact with Brussels-based and national campaigners to deliver frequently updated content and images for campaign and issues webpages
- Provide timely updates of links pages, "speaking out" pages, publications pages, and advertisement of cyberactions
- Undertake basic design work with images and banners in Adobe Photoshop for use on website
Media Support
- Work closely with the Communications Officer in delivering an optimum media support to FoEE campaigners
- Contribute to creative brainstorming of ideas for media stunts or stories
- Ensure an overview of media contacts through regular updates to journalists database and distribution lists, and strategic development of new contacts
- Follow up calls to journalists to sell in events or stories
- Monitor FoEE press coverage, provide analysis of its impact and present results to FoEE audiences
- Monitor news relating to FoEE campaigns in order to detect media opportunities
Writing and Editing
- Draft press releases, copy for the website and publications, stories for internal publications and other materials as requested
- Edit and proofread materials inlcuding reports, position papers, briefings, letters, speeches and web copy, ensuring correct use of English and consistent style, tone and presentation
- In close collaboration with the Director and the Head of Fundraising, provide a significant contribution to planning and reporting documents aimed at external audiences: editing, proofreading, restructuring, and ensuring consistency
Support to Communications function
- Stand in for Communications Officer when on vacation
- Stand in for Events Officer when on vacation
- Support Communications Officer and Events Officer in tasks including administration, logistics, attending actions, meetings or events
- Support Director in proofreading speeches, letters, documentation
Skills
- Commitment to the values, vision and mission of Friends of the Earth
- Educated to degree standard, at least 6 months relevant work experience
- English mother tongue
- Demonstrable web skills - ideally an html 'wizard' or a clear aptitude for learning
- A bright, confident self starter able to grasp quickly complex policy issues
- Self motivated and organised
- A natural communicator
- Strong and proficient writing skills
- Knowledge of French or other European languages an advantage
- Experience of Microsoft Access and Excel and Adobe Photoshop an advantage
- Knowledge of EU institutions and media desirable
- High levels of motivation, good team player, confident telephone skills, creativity, flexibility, sense of humour, political awareness
The intern will be based in our office in Brussels - a busy and highly motivating working environment in an international NGO. Friends of the Earth Europe will pay a monthly contribution to living costs.
