The European NGO Coalition on Corporate Social Responsibility & Corporate Accountability is looking for a

COORDINATOR

The European NGO Coalition on CSR is a recent initiative by a number of European civil society organisations and national coalitions working in the area of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate accountability to improve cooperation and develop common positions and viewpoints at the European level. The European NGO coalition aims to focus on capacity building and knowledge sharing among NGOs in Europe, including the new member states, about CSR policies of companies and governments (member states as well as EU), and to develop a common lobby strategy towards the European Union and its members states.

The European coalition consists of NGOs and NGO coalitions from Austria, France, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium, Finland, Netherlands, Russia, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, England, Norway, Finland and Sweden. The steering group includes IRENE, SOMO, Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE), Germanwatch, Manitese, the French Citizen Forum on CSR and CORE UK.

The Dutch organisation IRENE, together with its project partners SOMO and FoEE, obtained a one-year grant from the European Commission for the further development of the coalition.

For the overall coordination of the coalition in making and the execution of the project we are looking for a highly organized, energetic and motivated individual to coordinate the work of the coalition and contribute to our campaign and lobbying work. The coordinator will be based in the FoEE office in Brussels.

The coalition coordinator will be task managed by the members of the steering group and will be expected to work for the coalition as a whole. As the coalition was started up only recently in 2005, the mandate, areas of work and common aims and viewpoints with regards to CSR and corporate accountability need to be further developed in close consultation with the coalition members.

The project aims to:

  • Increase European cooperation amongst NGOs working on CSR: exchange experiences and information; develop NGO positions on CSR policies of companies, EU member states and the EU, debate possible joint advocacy strategies towards the EU and organise joint activities.

  • Influence CSR policies of the EU and its member states.

  • Inform the general public about CSR policies of companies and governments (member states as well as the EU) and engage the public in debates on these issues.

  • Present a joint NGO vision on CSR to other stakeholders at the European level, such as the business community and trade unions.

  • Promote consistency and transparency in the implementation of EU policies on CSR by the member states, such as EU directives on reporting, transparency and public procurement.

  • Build capacity and knowledge among NGOs, particularly in the new member states, about CSR policies of companies and governments (member states as well as the EU)

  • Tracking developments relevant to the coalition;

  • Ensuring regular, timely communication with coalition members;

  • Ensuring timely debate and decision making between members of the steering group;

  • Organising coalition events and meetings;

  • Managing budgets of the EU project

Experience:

  • Good understanding of the NGO sector and corporate social responsibility issues;

  • Prior work experience related to CSR/corporate accountability in the non-profit sector

  • Experience in coordinating NGOs at an international level

  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders from different backgrounds (Civil Society Groups, business, governments, parliamentarians, etc)

Profile:

  • Complete fluency in English (written and spoken) with proficiency in at least one other EU language (preferably French)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills - able to articulate clear messages to a variety of different audiences.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international team.
