FOE MEDNET CAMPAIGNS  2007

General Coordination of the Network

The Friends of the Earth MedNet network is coordinated by the European regional office based in Brussels, although all the network members are based in the Mediterranean Basin. The priority activities of MedNet in 2007 include:

1) THE EURO-MED FREE TRADE AREA (EMFTA)

MedNet aims to encourage a broad network of organizations and individuals to monitor the environmental and social impacts of the Mediterranean Free Trade Area (EMFTA) and to develop an effective voice for promoting common environmental concerns.

MedNet is a member of the advisory board to the  sustainability impact assessment (SIA) of the EuroMed free Trade Area (EMFTA), which was launched in early 2004.  MedNet leads NGO consultations in this process. We see our role in this committee as that of a watchdog and information facilitator to interested Mediterranean NGOs.

We in collaboration with other active Mediterranean environmental NGOs have drafted NGO position papers on the SIA. Furthermore, We have organised stakeholder consultations on the SIA.

2) THE HORIZON 2020 MEDITERRANEAN DEPOLLUTION INITIATIVE

The Horizon 2020 initiative to de-pollute the Mediterranean Sea by 2020 is a high profile Commission initiative, which aims to help implement the new Mediterranean environmental strategy. FoE MedNet will participate in the steering committee working to implement this initiative. We will Monitor and contribute to the development of the official work plan to implement the Horizon 2020. We will contribute to the development of a H2020 capacity building project in North Africa

3) THE MEDITERRANEAN COMMISSION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (MCSD)

FoE MedNet is a  member of the MCSD. The Mediterranean commission for sustainable development is a unique advisory body of the Mediterranean action plan with a specific focus on sustainable development issues in the Mediterranean Basin.

The MCSD is responsible for overseeing the implementation the Mediterranean strategy for sustainable development (MSSD) Mednet has in the past successfully mobilised hundreds of NGOs to work on the drafting of the MSSD.
