The Horizon 2020 initiative to de-pollute the Mediterranean Sea by 2020 is a high profile European Commission initiative, which aims to help implement the new Mediterranean environmental strategy. FoE MedNet participates in the steering committee working to implement this initiative. We monitor and contribute to the development of the official work plan to implement Horizon 2020. MedNet contributed to the design and dissemination of the H2020 NGO capacity building questionnaire which was sent to environmental NGOs in the Mediterranean partner countries in late 2007. Hundreds of NGOs responded and analysis of their capacity building needs can be found here at NGO capacity building needs review The EIB also drafted a report on a Mediterranean Hot spot Investment programme (MedHSIP) at the end of 2007. The purpose of the study was (i) to create a first pipeline of bankable investment projects and (ii) to assess the need for future technical assistance support. Based on the country visits and meetings with relevant authorities, the expert team has identified 41 potential bankable investments. Mednet has reacted to the draft report calling fuller stakeholder involvement in MedHSIP and for fully integrated capacity building measures to be incorporated throughout H2020.
