THE MEDITERRANEAN STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (MSSD)

The Mediterranean region is experiencing a period of extraordinary change, in particular in terms of population growth and political and economic developments. At the same time, the region’s fragile environment is under threat as a result of these changes. UNEP`s Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) within the context of the Barcelona Convention to protect the Mediterranean Sea aims to address these threats and challenges by preparing and implementing a Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD). The strategy was adopted by Mediterranean states in November 2005.
