Palacio's last stand: sham nuclear laws fizzle out

(Brussels, 8 Sept 2004) Responding to the European Commission's adoption of revised proposals for two new Euratom directives, Friends of the Earth Europe energy campaigner Mark Johnston said:

"Today's move is Mrs Palacio's last stand. Her pro-nuclear public relations exercise has run out of fizz. The new text does not differ substantially from earlier Council drafts and so is unlikely to move any of the delegations. She has left only a lingering embarrassment to her successor.

"We call on the new Commission to adopt a different approach. Instead of the Commission aiding the nuclear industry with sham safety schemes, it should be bringing it into line with other energy options. Europe has to get a grip
on the increasing state aid being used by nuclear firms to cheat the market and prop up an ailing industry."
