Green 10 statement on delay of EU air quality and marine thematic strategies

Two environmental thematic strategies due to be presented by the European Commission in July - air quality and marine protection - have been officially removed from the EU agenda and postponed until an unspecified date. The decision has been taken by EU Commission President Barroso.

The 'Green 10' group of environmental NGOs in Brussels reacted with a letter to European Commission's President (letter).

"At the time when world leaders meeting at the G8 summit are showing unprecedent attention to environmental issues, it is perverse that the European Commission is backtracking on its environmental committments", says Tony Long, Director of WWF European Policy Office. "Public health and environment policies are among the most supported actions at European level. This is a time for global EU leadership on environmental issues and an excellent opportunity to reconnect the EU with European public opinion, an opportunity that the Commission is throwing away with its decision to postpon action".
