Friends of the Earth Europe slams wasted opportunity to cut nuclear research budget

Strasbourg, June 15 - Following the European Parliament vote today on the 7th Research Framework Programmer (FP7), Friends of the Earth Europe has slammed the result as a missed chance to reduce funding for nuclear research.

Silva Herrmann, nuclear campaigner at Friends of the Earth Europe said,
"Friends of the Earth Europe is disappointed that the European Parliament did not use this vote to call for the reduction of the nuclear research budget. The Parliament has consequently approved giving nuclear research more funding than all other energy technologies combined, despite the well documented dangers of nuclear power."

"Friends of the Earth Europe welcomes the Parliament's call for two thirds of the funding for non-nuclear energy to go into renewables and energy efficiency. However, it is unacceptable that even with this commitment, nuclear energy research would receive two and a half times the amount of funding that renewables and energy efficiency will receive," Hermann added.
