051 | REALISING SUSTAINABILITY: WOOD

    possible options in the wood sector

Increasing recycling of paper, pulp and timber products;
Developing production of alternative fibre crops which use less land than forest, and using waste fibre from agricultural crops;
Product redesign for durability (especially timber use in construction) and recycling;
Switching to a mix of domestic species, implementing sustainable forestry practices for all forests (including selective felling instead of clear cutting);
Taking measures to reduce the emissions of nitrogen (mainly from traffic and agriculture) and acidifying substances (mainly from electricity generation and industrial combustion in CEE and NIS states) which damage forests;
Creating economically unused forest reserves, particularly in vulnerable ecosystems and in watershed areas.
