017 |SUSTAINABLE EUROPE

The fundamental principles (equity and environmental space) of Friends of the Earth's vision of sustainability were applied to Europe in a study carried out by the German Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy. The 1995 study "Towards a Sustainable Europe" sketches out elements of an action plan for a sustainable Europe, defining goals and intermediate targets.

Based on this study, national member organisations of Friends of the Earth calculated the necessary adjustments in the use of energy, raw materials and land for about 30 European countries.

This revolutionary approach was broadly discussed in roundtables all over Europe, and the concept of environmental space has since appeared in many official documents from European governments.
