In the run-up to the United Nations Conference of Sustainable Development (UNCSD), Rio+20, June 20th-22nd; Friends of the Earth Europe, Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) and The Transnational Institute organised a public debate on the concept of the 'green economy' currently being promoted by the European Union and the United Nations ahead of talks.

A key European transparency law is under threat, according to environmental and transparency organisations. In a letter to the European Council, civil society warn that the current state of negotiations around the access to documents regulation could make it even more difficult for civil society to participate in EU decision making. Any changes to the current regulation should be in line with the European Treaties and international standards.

Today, World Environment Day, and two weeks before a major United Nations (UN) Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Friends of the Earth International started a campaign urging the UN to limit the excessive influence of multinational corporations on its decision-making processes.

In the run up to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio (Brazil), Friends of the Earth France have launched their "Nature is not for sale!" campaign to highlight the dangers of putting a price on nature. Making nature, ecosystems and fundamentals like water tradable will not solve our current global crisis.

A guide for citizens 'Nature is not for sale!' criticises the Rio +20 "Declaration on natural capital" which outlines the new market mechanisms through which finance is taking over nature as part of the so called "green economy".

The United Nations Conference of Sustainable Development (UNCSD), known as Rio+20, will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 18th - 21st. The Summit is expected to deliver measures to address the multiple crises the world is currently facing over energy, food, climate, poverty and finance.

In June governments of the world will gather in Brazil for the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. They are expected to agree on a declaration that should address and propose solutions to the multiple crises the world is facing on issues such as energy, food, climate and finance.

Friends of the Earth Europe, as part of a coalition of civil society organisations led by Client Earth, have written an open letter to the Ministers of Justice, and the Danish Presidency, to express serious concerns about plans for changing rules on access to documents. These changes would make it more difficult for citizens, journalists and civil society organisations to scrutinise and challenge the policy-making processes of the European Union institutions.

Brussels, March 20 - Today marks the first anniversary of the 'cash-for-amendments' scandal, in which several Members of the European Parliament were exposed tabling legislative amendments in exchange for money [1]. Ethics campaigners warn that the new code introduced since the scandal does not include all the safeguards necessary to prevent another 'lobbygate'.

Friends of the Earth Europe today endorses a new report released by partners in the tar sands campaign, Climate Action Network (CAN) Canada, which highlights Canada's dirty oil diplomacy. The report documents how the Canadian government's global push to sell the tar sands is little more than an extension of industry lobbying, and has left Canada's environmental credibility in tatters and its peoples at odds with their governors.

Friends of the Earth Europe and Client Earth, with the support of 19 other civil society organisations including CAN Europe, Corporate Europe Observatory, ECAS, FERN, Greenpeace, Spinwatch, Statewatch and T&E, today sent a petition to the European Parliament asking that they ensure the European Commission complies with its legal obligations to provide systematically better access to documents. Access to documents is not only enshrined in law, it is a prerequisite for lobby transparency and full democratic participation.
